Bio

I am a PhD researcher at the university of Ghent, working on gendered islamophobia and the racialisation of Muslims in Belgium. I am particularly interested in the different manifestations of islamophobia and how these intersect with secularism and whiteness, as well as the responses and resistance strategies that Muslims use to negotiate (gendered) islamophobia. Furthermore, I try to approach my research from a decolonial perspective by using participatory action research and arts based methods. I have previously worked as a researcher at KU Leuven on the Folk, Authority and Radicalisms project, researching the impact of counterterrorism measures on Belgian Muslims and co-authored the report ‘Between fundamental rights & surveillance’. I have an MA from KU Leuven in Islamic theology and a BA (Hons) in Arabic and Middle Eastern Studies from the University of Manchester, UK.
